The biggest Instagram mistake

What is the biggest mistake that you could be making right now on Instagram? First of all, Instagram is a fantastic marketing asset. Why? Because it’s a great way to talk to those within your target market on a large scale and send them to your website where they can be prompted to purchase your product or service and convert them to customers.

The biggest thing that I’ve seen when people have come to me and said, “Hey, teach me how to grow followers like you guys have with Haworth Guitars. How did you get to be almost 100,000 followers?” Well look, the biggest thing I’ve seen, is they’ll say to me, “Okay, I want to grow my followers.” And I’ll go to their Instagram and they’ll say, “I’m a… ” In their description in their bio they’ll say, “I’m a musician, I love dogs, I love walks on the beach, I love rainbows, and I love eating chicken.”

Honestly, it’s really hard to grow your following if you try and be everything to everyone. It’s not until you really niche into something and find that area that you can be an expert in, that you can really look at growing your following. If someone lands on that profile, they will most likely be confused – and when you confuse, you lose. Maybe there’s a post about a dog, but there’ll be a post about some rainbows, a post about that person eating some chicken, going for some walks on the beach, and maybe a bit of music too. So how are you going to attract followers if you’re trying to be everything to everyone?

This was a mistake that I learned in the early days, because Haworth’s is a music store. We sell drums, we sell keyboards, we sell harmonicas and ukuleles as well as guitars. But it wasn’t until I really focused on just focusing all of our Instagram content on just guitars that our following really started to grow.

So the key is, you need to be niching. You need to be finding that thing that you can be an expert in. And if you’re not sure, then you can ask some of your customers or some of your friends. If it’s a personal brand you’re trying to grow, ask some of your friends, ask some of the people that follow you already. What area are you an expert in? Once you know that, really niche into that area, and that is the best way to really start to grow your following.

There’s obviously a whole bunch of other things that you obviously need to do as well, but that’s a good place to start. I hope this has been helpful. If you want to find out more, or to work with myself and my team 1:1, contact us today.
