Do you have a compelling vision?

After speaking with a number of clients about their five to seven-year vision, I’m finding out that a lot of people don’t have a vision, or a long-term goal of where they want to end up in their business.

What can stop people from writing down a vision and having clarity on where they want to go in the next 5, 7, or 10 years?

The main barrier stopping a lot of people from writing down a vision and becoming clear on where they want to go is, they can easily get caught up in the how. Some common questions people can get stuck asking themselves include: How am I going to achieve this? How am I going to make this happen? You might think about something that you want long-term and wonder: “well, how am I actually going to do that? That sounds almost unattainable”.

But the key with this process is to not worry about the how. You can worry about the how when you chunk it down into shorter milestones: 12, 6 and 3-month milestones. In fact, all of that can be worked out later. When you write down your visions, it’s important to ultimately think about: where do you want to be? And the ‘how’ can be worked out later.

So, how can you create a compelling vision for your business?

In reality, if you’ve got a big enough why, the how takes care of itself. However, it’s important to ask yourself: Where do I want to be in my business in the next five to seven years?

When answering this question, it’s important to make it compelling and inspiring, as well as practical. Some key questions you can ask yourself include:

  • Where do I want to be financially?
  • Where do I want to be geographically?
  • How do I want the business’ structure look?
  • What do I want my role to be?
  • What do I want my staff’s roles to be?

After answering these questions, you can move towards painting a clearer picture of where you’re going to be in the next five to seven years.

It’s also okay if it’s a little bit unrealistic. It’s okay if you don’t know the how, but it’s about writing down that compelling vision so that you’ve got something that inspires and motivates you, and ultimately drives you to get out of bed every day.

Make sure you keep your team in the loop

It’s very important that you get your staff on board with the vision, too. This helps ensure your team are all on the same page, and they feel as though they’re involved in the key processes of the business. This can also inspire creativity, through new and innovative ideas that your business can implement.
